Shri Datta Mandir

Temples in Goa have existed over centuries and their decline happened during the Portuguese rule.Even before Goa was taken over by the Portuguese, there were several temples flourishing in Goa. Many of these temples were decimated and then subsequently reconstructed. Some temples remained unscathed and untouched by the wrath of the foreign rulers. Shri Datta Mandir is one of the oldest temples in Goa that has endured foreign invasions and the ravages of time.

Shri Datta Mandir, Goa was established around 37 kilometres away from the capital city of Panaji, at Dattawadi in Sanquelim. From Margao, the temple is established at an expanse of round 40 kilometres. The temple was constructed as a shrine for the safekeeping of Lord Trimurthy or Lord Dattatreya's idol. Trimurthy is the pattern of a deity that was formed by the blend of the three gods. Each deity symbolizing creation, preservation and destruction, in that order. Brahma symbolizing creation, Vishnu symbolizing preservation and Maheshwar symbolizing destruction. It is believed that this relentless cycle of creation, preservation and destruction is what runs the universe.

The temple is nestled in between an attractive hillock , dense palm trees and lush green vegetation all around. These serene surroundings provide a relaxed and soothing ambience for visitors. Every year, hundreds of devotees from all over Goa and other parts of the homeland visit this temple. Many devotees believe that the temple has unique healing powers and people with unsound brain or mental difficulties are known to have been healed through prayers to this deity. The Shri Datta Mandir is adorned beautifully. The interiors of the temples are completely enclosed with white marble giving it a serene and religious look. The architecture of the temple is superb and will enthral you with its intricacies. Every year, the Datta Jayanti carnival is commemorated in the temple with large pomp and show. The carnival is commemorated in the month of December and attracts hundreds of devotees and tourists from all over Goa.
