Lord Chandranath means 'Lord of the Moon'. Lord Chandranath is believed to be a model of Lord Shiva. This deity was assessed to be the presiding deity of the Bhojas. In the ancient times, the state of Goa was under the rule of Bhojas. The temple is believed to be nearly 1500 years old. The temple offers panoramic views of the city which leaves the visitors nearly mesmerized.

The Sri Chandreshwar Temple has stairs which lead you to the temple. One section of the stairs is made of metal while the other is made of granite. The temple houses the photograph of Lord Shiva in the model of a Shiva lignite Shiva linga is carved out of rock and is a unique sight. The full moon is of great importance here and the Shiva Linga attains a mystical beauty. The Shiv linga (on a full moon night) appears to be submerged in water. Within the precincts of the temple, you shall also locate a chariot made out of wood and draped in wonderful plans and patterns.

The Sri Chandreshwar Temple also observes a lot of festivals in honour of Lord Chandreshwar. The festival of Mahan Shiva Retry is very important and is celebrated with great pomp and show. A host of devotees and pilgrims visit the temple during this time to bask in the festivities. The temple is easily accessible from all parts of the state and one can easily board the bus by local transport. This is one temple which is a must visit for any tourist.
