Goa is a multi-lingual state, thanks to its chequered history of thousands of years, which is a crucible of people from varied nationalities. Foreign rulers, who invaded Goa, left behind their descendents and even they have left an imprint on the cultural fabric of Goa. At present, Marathi and Konkani are the two foremost dialects of Goa. Hindi, the nationwide dialect of India, is well treasured in Goa too. In foremost villages, English is amply utilised in writing and conversation. Goa being an important tourist friendly destination presents English -friendly destination for tourists. On the other hand, Portuguese, the dialect of the colonial rulers and mandatory medium of study, failed to make a dent in the mind of the most of Goans. It remained a language spoken by the elite and completely alienated the masses. After freedom in 1961, Portuguese dialect literally fizzled away and lost all its flavour and usage. It resided only the dialect of the elite but alienated the masses. Thus just after the exit of Portuguese rulers, the Portuguese dialect lost all its favour and usage. In place of Portuguese, Konkani and Marathi came into prominence in the mindspace of the people of Goa. These languages endured the Portuguese rule as they were taught in secret studies at home. Just like any other Indian language, these languages derived their usage from their parent language 'Sanskrit'. For writing purposes both these languages use the Devanagri Script. On the other hand Portuguese required the knowledge of both Roman and English script. This eventually became a hindrance in its growth and it slowly fizzled away from the mindspace of Goa's denizens.
