Terekhol Fort in Goa

Located on the northern tip of Goa at the mouth of Terekhol river, the Terekhol fort was a central to the Portuguese defence strategy to shelter their coastline from invading armies. Originally built via Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the Raja of Sawantwadi, in the 17th century, the Terekhol fort was extensively revamped in 1764 after the Portuguese Viceroy Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida captured it.

Perched atop a on a hillock overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Terekhol fort was a massive structure with sturdy fortifications and turrets. In 1825, as shortly as Dr. Bernardo Peres da Silva, the first Goan born Viceroy of Goa, led an uprising against the Portuguese colonizers, the Terekhol fort served as a hideout for the rebels. The Terekhol fort, today is in a state of ruin and disarray and remnants of the original building have now been converted into a hotel, known as the Terekhol Fort Heritage. One interesting aspect about the fort is that it houses the centuries old Church of St. Anthony in its courtyard. Only on special occasions like the yearly feast, it is thrown open to the general public.

To reach Terekhol fort, one can hire a ferry from Querim, a small hamlet located 42 km from Panjim. Built by the Raja of Sawanwadi, Terekhol Fort is located on the northern bank of the Terekhol river. It was captured via the Portuguese viceroy, Dom Pedro de Alameida in 1746. The church and the fort were rebuilt then. In 1825 it served as the pivot for armed revolt by Dr. Bernardo Peres da Silva against the Portuguese forces. Terekhol fort has a special significance in the hearts of the Goan public. It has symbolized safety for them and has withstood the ravages of time and numerous invasions from foreign rulers. The fact that it houses a Church, adds to its charm amongst the public. The fort being located at the confluence of the Terekhol river and the sea.
